The Original Concept of The Scrum Master

18-11-2016 - 12:4008-01-2017 - 19:22

A Scrum Master was a coach; a Scrum Master was NOT a Manager, explicitely NOT a Manager, not supposed to be a Manager. The Scrum Master was responsible for defending the process, but nothing else. Not defend the schedule, not defend the budget, he did not defend the stories, he did not defend the backlog. He only defended the process, he or she, and the role was supposed to rotate through the various team members. It was just supposed to be something like "Huh, this sprint you're supposed to be the Scrum Master!". And frankly the idea of the role was to slowly kind of fade away so that in the end you wouldn't need a Scrum Master. That was the initial concept. I don't think that the Project Managers who took the "Certified Scrum Master" course liked that particular interpretation. I think they wanted to be … Scrum Masters. — Robert C. Martin in The Land that Scrum Forgot
